I've been to Mass in amazing European Cathedrals, but having Mass in the woods with the Troops of Saint George seems even more special. I love it when the priest elevates the Sacred Body of Christ at sunrise under a canopy of trees. It'll take your breath away.
The TSG an opportunity like none other in the Church... It’s an outdoor context, a school of heroic virtue where Catholic men, with our sons, strive to become the Catholic men we ought to be. It is a rarefied time and place for iron to sharpen iron, to become who God wants us to be as Catholic Christian men, joyfully striving to know, love, and serve God.
Praying the Rosary, around a campfire, with 50 other men and boys is life changing. And watching Franciscan Friars fly down a zip line with the boys is pretty cool as well! I’m so very thankful TSG exists.
My son and I have loved the ability to use the outdoors as our canvas to grow closer together, while growing closer to God and our Catholic faith.
Troops of St. George fulfilled a desire I had to spend time in the outdoors with my sons learning how to "rough it" like our forefathers through skills such as primitive camping, dutch oven cooking, canoeing, rock climbing,and other outdoor fundamentals. Moreover was the opportunity to do this with the sacraments and daily rosary included! What better way to build father-son relationships and develop young men of character by having masculine fun while in a spirit of virtue, servant leadership, and prayer.
I think it's cool spending time in the wilderness with my dad and friends. I especially enjoy when our local priests celebrate Mass at our troop's outside chapel.
I love the Troops of St. George because I get to go camping with my dad, learning outdoor survival, and I get to serve at Mass in a chapel we built in the woods.
Boys and young men do well to join together for fellowship, to acquire a variety of skills useful in nature and urban life alike, as well as form an identity as they serve the Church, taking new roles of service appropriate to their age and abilities. The Troops of St. George are precisely the type of organization for Catholic youth that fits these needs. Though a new organization, it has both a terrific patron to intercede for them and some experienced men who can direct its successful accomplishment of its goals. I highly recommend the development of Troops of St. George in every parish.
